TEEN DRIVING PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS: What the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) Requires
Step 1: Student attends Driver’s Education classes and receives a Certificate of Completion.
Step 2: Student goes to the DMV and takes the written permit test. (Prior to age
17 1/2, student will also need to show proof of enrollment in a Behind-the-Wheel course.)
Step 3: Once the permit is obtained, student begins Behind-the-
Wheel driving program.
Step 4: Student is eligible to take the license test upon completion of Driver’s Education and Behind-the-Wheel Training. (Note: Student must hold a driver’s permit for 6 months or turn 18 before they will be eligible to take the license test.)
TEENAGE DRIVER’S EDUCATION PROGRAM
• Teenagers aged 15 1/2 through 17 1/2 years old who wish to obtain a California Driver’s License are required to take a 30-hour driver education course approved by the California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV).
• Students may begin taking classes toward a driver’s permit as early as age 15.
Options for Driver’s Education include the following:
• Students may attend classes on Saturdays at any of our locations. You must attend a total of 4 times (They do not need to be consecutive.)
• Weekday classes are available in some of our locations during school breaks
• Students may complete our Online Driver’s Education course.
ONLINE DRIVER’S EDUCATION
• Teenagers aged 15 1/2 through 17 1/2 years old who wish to obtain a California Driver’s License are required to take a 30-hour driver education course approved by the California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). This requirement can be satisfied by completing our DMV approved online Driver’s Education course.
• If you wish to get your permit when you turn 15 1/2 we suggest that you plan to complete the online program before that time so that you will be qualified to take the DMV written test.
• Teens looking to obtain a California driver’s permit are required to drive a minimum of 6 hours with a licensed instructor. This training is conducted in three classes of two hours each. During this course, students will learn the basic driving skills necessary to operate a vehicle safely. Upon completion, the driving instructor will issue a certificate as required by the DMV.
REMEMBER: If you are younger than 17 1/2, you must be enrolled in Behind-the-Wheel/Driver’s Training before you can take your permit test.
REMEMBER: Your permit is not valid until you complete your first Behind-the-Wheel lesson with a licensed instructor.
